About Kelly — The Glyphosate Girl


Kelly never planned to become a pesticide activist. She was a busy mom of two young kids when her health began collapsing — neuropathy, stomach issues, rashes, vision problems, extreme weakness. She saw 18 specialists across every system of her body. Not one ran a vitamin panel. One endocrinologist told her her problem was that she wasn’t working. She needed a job — “J-O-B.”


It was a psychiatrist — during routine intake bloodwork — who finally discovered the truth. Kelly had scurvy. No B1. Critically low B12. Zero vitamin D. She was completely malnourished and nobody had thought to check.


After recovering through nutrition and an elimination diet, she started asking questions. At a celiac conference at Columbia University in 2017, she walked up to the microphone and asked one simple question: “Is anything happening on the farm with the grain?”

A General Mills employee found her afterward and told her something that would change her life: right before harvest, grain is sprayed with Roundup — the weed killer whose active ingredient is glyphosate — and it goes directly into bread and cereal.

She quit her job. She went to the courtroom. And she has never stopped fighting since.


What Is Glyphosate?


Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, the world’s most used herbicide. It was introduced in the mid-1970s with the claim that it only impacted plants — not people — because it works on a biochemical pathway not present in human cells.


What they did not account for: that same pathway exists in our gut microbiome.

Glyphosate goes into your body and kills your gut bacteria in the same way it kills weeds. Not all bacteria — specifically your beneficial ones. The Lactobacillus strains you’re trying to replenish with probiotics. The bacteria that regulate immunity, mood, digestion, and inflammation. Glyphosate destroys them selectively while allowing pathogenic bacteria like E. coli to thrive.


The result: dysbiotic gut, leaky gut, systemic inflammation, and a cascade of downstream health consequences that most doctors never trace back to the root cause.

The Courtroom Nobody Showed Up To


In 2018, the first-ever Monsanto glyphosate cancer trial began in San Francisco. It was the first time Monsanto had been tried in front of a jury — a landmark moment in the fight against pesticides. Kelly showed up to protest. There were no other protesters. No press. No cameras. She walked right into the courtroom and sat down next to Bobby Kennedy — who was the attorney leading the case. She had no idea who he was. She quit her job that day and blogged every single day of the first three trials.


How Glyphosate Actually Works in Your Body


Glyphosate was approved based on the claim it doesn’t affect human cells — and technically that’s true. It works on the shikimate pathway, which human cells don’t have. But our gut microbiome does. So glyphosate enters the body and selectively destroys our most beneficial bacteria while allowing harmful pathogens to thrive. The EPA’s framework for evaluating pesticide safety doesn’t even account for the microbiome — it’s based on science from the 1950s and has never been updated.


The Fertility Crisis Nobody Is Connecting


Kelly presented evidence to the EPA linking glyphosate to lower testosterone, increased miscarriage rates, and declining sperm quality. She was shown out the door. She took four semen samples from male volunteers — all four positive for glyphosate. A French study confirmed that farmers using glyphosate had significantly higher infertility rates than those who don’t, with glyphosate found directly in their semen. Sperm counts in the US have dropped 50% — and Kelly argues it is not a mystery.


The Supreme Court Case That Could Change Everything


A glyphosate cancer case has reached the Supreme Court. The current administration has recommended — on behalf of Bayer — that the Supreme Court side with the chemical company. If Bayer wins, it would strip all Americans of the right to sue pesticide manufacturers — not just for glyphosate, but for all 57,000 pesticide products. ALS. Parkinson’s. Cancer. Autoimmune disease. Infertility. No recourse. No accountability. Forever. Kelly is organizing a massive rally called People vs. Poison on April 27th in front of the Supreme Court from 9am to noon.


Trump’s Executive Order & the Bayer Connection


Weeks before the Supreme Court hearing, President Trump signed an executive order to increase domestic manufacturing of glyphosate under the banner of “national security.” Kelly draws a direct parallel to Agent Orange — the extremely toxic Vietnam-era pesticide that also received national security protection, allowing manufacturers to avoid large settlements for the generational health damage it caused. Kelly also notes that Bayer and Bayer lobbyists contributed a reported million dollars to the Trump inaugural ball.


The Pre-Harvest Desiccation Scandal


Most people don’t know this practice exists. Since around the year 2000, many US farmers spray their entire grain fields with glyphosate right before harvest — not to kill weeds, but to dry the crop uniformly so they can harvest in a single pass. The grain is killed with glyphosate, then goes directly to the mill and into your food. This is not mandatory. It is not done in most other countries. It is done because glyphosate is cheap and convenient. The result is grain with very high, very fresh glyphosate residues going directly into bread, cereal, oats, and legumes. Hummus is particularly high.


The Fake Organic Problem


The US imports the vast majority of its organic food because American farmland has been almost entirely converted to GMO soy, corn, and wheat. The USDA tests domestic organic farms for pesticide residues — but does not test imported organic food. So a farm in Argentina can ship grain sprayed with pesticides to the US, slap a USDA organic label on it, and sell it to you at Whole Foods without any verification. Kelly describes a specific case of an Argentinian farmer with two identical piles of grain — one going to Europe (which tests imports) and one going to the US (which doesn’t).


What Is Actually Happening to Our Soil


Kelly went to a GMO farm with a shovel and dug into the soil. Healthy agricultural land should be filled with worms. She found a few carcasses. Zero living worms. The soil is dead — stripped of the microbial life that makes it fertile, that produces nutrients, that creates the food chain from the ground up. Broccoli from 50 years ago had twice the nutrient density of today’s broccoli. Our food is growing in depleted soil that has been chemically destroyed.


The Florida Ag-Gag Bill


A provision was quietly slipped into Florida’s state farm bill that would have made it illegal to criticize food or farming practices — essentially silencing anyone talking about pesticides, glyphosate, or food safety. Violators could be sued for defamation. Kelly joined the Captains for Clean Water — a group of Florida fishermen who have witnessed the devastation of pesticide runoff in waterways — and fought the provision all the way to Tallahassee. They won. But a new bill is now circulating that would classify activists like Kelly as terrorists.


Pesticide Liability Shields Are Spreading


Beyond the Supreme Court case, individual states are already passing pesticide liability shields. Georgia and North Dakota have already passed laws making it impossible to sue pesticide manufacturers if you become ill from exposure. Kelly is working at the state level and urges everyone to sign up at stoppoison.org to be notified when these bills come up in their state.


The Regenerative Alternative


Kelly is co-executive director of American Regeneration and works directly with farmers making the transition away from chemical agriculture. She is also involved in the documentary Common Ground. One of their co-founders, Rick Clark — an Indiana farmer — switched to regenerative farming after cancer began appearing across his community, including in his own wife. The first year he stopped spraying a fungicide on one field, the crop came in healthier than expected. The birds came back. The ecosystem started to rebuild. Kelly believes the solution already exists — it just needs funding, policy support, and the political will to implement it.
